I took a photo of our bred black angus heifers when I was out feeding a couple years ago. I laid on the ground as a group of them surrounded me, and I got a really neat shot of them. What I should have grasped early on was that it was NOT a good reference photo! The lighting was terrible. It was overcast, and black angus cattle are a challenge to paint as it is. There was little to no planning on my part from the start. I started with ACRYLICS with these gals, and then switched to oils when I made the change in 2022. In January of 2023, had a major push to get these bred heifers finished for an up coming art show (FOR MARCH 1!!). I tried my best, changed the composition of the painting and focused using a grid system. Still, the work would not flow! I had been asked multiple times at trade shows “when are you going to paint a Hereford bull?”. Finally, I had a conversation with a gal at one of my booths about horned hereford bulls. She felt the same about herefords as I do about angus. When I finally hit my wall, I decided to make the change. And boy, did it flow! And the best part… ALL THAT WONDERFUL TEXTURE left behind from the angus. Because I couldn’t use solvents to thin my paint for the layer of the Hereford bull, I had to paint fearlessly and intentional. Big globs of paint, and flow. I have to say, I love the results. Don’t even be afraid to pivot, or change direction. And when you do, don’t REGRET the past. They are lessons, and “texture” that build character and make where you are now BEAUTIFUL.
